Little Bear
Back to where I’ve started.
Little Bear was my very first creation during the time that I attempted Tung Fang Design University (Taiwan) 2004-2009.
Image 1(drawing) was complected in 2009.There is an other color version with pink hair stored somewhere in my Taiwan family home. It all began with a nickname "little bear" thats how my classmates called me. I start doodling on my textbooks, add her to many of art project, in the animation homework, sculpture homework.. etc. Many year has gone by, this bear is part of me or, I'm part of this bear, is hard to say at this point.
I’ve been slowly making sculpture for a while now since 2018, and this little bear has been in my mind the whole time waiting for me to be good enough one day and bring her to alive. Also, I had a small wish in mind in these years. I thought once I made her, I will bring her back to Taiwan to visit the teacher who inspired me about sculpture making. His name is teacher Chen, 陳清汶.
Although teacher Chen was specialized in woodworking, sculpting and mold making but in fact, he had very wide rang of skills in master level from any graphic to three dimensional. He was like a walking library to many of us. If we broke anything, go find teacher Chen. Doesn’t know how to make something? Go find teacher Chen. He is always in his woodwork shop.
I remembered while I was still in school, roughly 17 years old, there was once I was walking through woodwork shop in a sunny afternoon, saw a sculpture of buddha’s face is sitting on the working table, unfinished. I recognize that is teacher Chen’s work. Dusty air makes woodwork shop looks a bit blur, but it doesn’t block the sunshine from breaking through to window. All the micro dust are shine in the air, on buddha’s face as well. She looks stately and peaceful. I stood there for a long time.
Seed of making sculpture was planted in that afternoon but I didn’t realized that until many many years later, and I really want to tell this story to teacher Chen and thank him for that.
During my last visit in Taiwan, me and couple of my friends went to visit him in school. We all had a nice afternoon and teacher Chen has mention he will be retire after that summer due to his health and return to his home town.
Back then I haven’t make any sculpture that I think is good enough to show him, so me and my friend make a promise, next time we will ho visit him. I will bring him my artwork and hopefully he will give me his opinion and some advice.
Although I’m proud of myself making little bear come true but I’m also failed myself not being good enough, fast enough to fulfilled my promise.
Teacher Chen has passed away in 2022.
